Oral Health Care Services for Needy Residents in Urban Area

Abstract
The oral health care service for needy residents at Pansong-dong in Pusan had been carried out froml994 to 1996 by volunteers; dental students and dentists in Pusan National University. The aim of this study is to evaluate the adequacy of the oral health care services and to provide data for the development of oral health care services for needy residents. The oral health care services were provided 106 times for 3 years at the social welfare center in Pansong-dong area. 674 volunteers took part in the services for 3 years and they were consisted of 243 dentists and 431 students. 1,109 patients received dental treatments for 3 years and 10.5 patients were treated per visit. The total cases of dental treatments for 3 years was 1,316 and the mean of treatment case was 12.4 per visit. Most dental treatments were the secondary and tertiary preventive dental treatments including fillings and teeth extractions . The oral examinations, caries activity tests and fluoride mouthrinsing had been carried out at the kindergarten attached to social welfare center. 76.6% of the dental students participated in the oral health care services 1-3 times, 16.1% did 4-6 times, and 7.3% did over 7 times. 80.9% of them thought that the oral health care services are valuable and 81.8% of them insisted that oral health care service should continue. They wished that the complement of dental equipments, strong voluntarism and convenient transportation. Future studies should evaluate changes in treatment needs, demands and service utilization in the area. We suggest that the comprehensive oral health care services including preventive and prosthetic treatments should be developed.
